How to be a successful female CEO, without burning out?
You decided to leave the corporate world to pursue your dream of starting your own business. This choice feels deeply fulfilling, but the journey is not always easy. Along the way, you have encountered the challenge of balancing your feminine energy while taking on the role of CEO. In this article, we will explore the unique challenges faced by female entrepreneurs and how embracing your feminine essence can become a valuable asset in business.
What the corporate world taught us
One crucial point to start with is that most entrepreneurs used to work in the corporate world before. Maybe you created a business that allows you to continue with your profession, or perhaps you reinvented yourself completely. In both cases, we need to acknowledge that years were spent working for others. Historically, it is still relatively recent that women have had careers; yet, the modern work environment is still heavily influenced by systems that were designed with men in mind.
Whether we are aware of it or not, as women, we find ourselves working in environments that were intended primarily for men. When women joined the workforce, they were expected to fit into the existing system and work like men. But our biologies differ, and our needs do too.
Starting a business often gives us, for the first time, the freedom to design how we truly want to work. As entrepreneurs, we can choose our schedule, our collaborators, and the rhythm of our days. This is deeply empowering.
Yet, breaking free from the old system is not always easy. Years of working in environments designed for men have trained us to be self-critical, to override our natural rhythms, and to ignore our body’s craving for flow and creativity. Even when we long to work differently, stress and pressure can push us back into old patterns.
To thrive as female CEOs, we need to consciously acknowledge what the corporate paradigm gave us, but also what it cost us — and then intentionally choose a new way of working that honours our feminine energy. I wrote a detailed article on why women should not work like men and how to adapt our workflows: check it out here.
Leading from the feminine energy
Being an entrepreneur is not an easy choice. It is a courageous one. On the entrepreneurial path, we face many fears: fear of losing money, of not earning enough, of not selling enough, of being seen online, or of being perceived as too bold or too assertive. Fear is an integral part of the journey. It will appear at every stage, whether you are just starting out or are an experienced business owner. In business, we must continuously learn and grow. As we evolve, fear often waits to challenge the next version of ourselves. When fear arises, it can be tempting to seek confidence and safety in following prescribed methods or conventional approaches. It is easy to lean on the past, on our education, on our previous career. But we need to remember that as female CEOs, we are in a position to instore a new balance, one that allows us to be both successful and wildly feminine. It is not about compromising, but about reclaiming all aspects of our feminine energy, also in business. Unfortunately, fear and stress can cause us to lose touch with our feminine energy, pushing us to work in a manner reminiscent of the old paradigm.
As women with core feminine energy, we need to reclaim our feminine energy in business as well. While this may be limited as employees, we have the opportunity to embrace a new paradigm as CEOs fully. And that is to our advantage. Our feminine energy brings a lot to our projects. Feminine energy is characterised by its ability to feel, receive, create and bring into being. When used in business, our creativity becomes limitless. It becomes much easier to feel inspired and to convey our vision. We become a channel for our projects, and shape our path much more on desire and devotion than on ‘rules’. In other words, our feminine energy is a tremendous asset for business. It is what will bring life to our projects and provide powerful, almost vibrational marketing that customers can feel.
Feminine embodiment as a protection against burnout
In the professional world, almost all of us have learned to lead from our masculine centre. This is often the only acceptable option in the corporate world. Of course, as women, we are perfectly capable of leading from masculine energy. We possess both feminine and masculine energies, and these two energies are equally valuable. In fact, they are complementary. But for most of us, we have been forced to lead exclusively from our masculine energy. If we do this for extended periods, it naturally creates an imbalance. As women, we need to feel nourished by our feminine energy, to feel bathed in it. And our businesses also need our feminine energy.
A company founded by a woman who honours and protects her feminine energy can be instantly recognised. It radiates structure and abundance, as well as flow and a nurturing quality. Our businesses can serve as a channel for this feminine energy. This embodies the paradigm of feminine leadership.
Finally, feminine energy is not only valuable in business; it also serves as a protective measure against burnout and stress. When a woman leads her business exclusively from her masculine energy, she cannot feel completely nourished. In an overly masculine paradigm, success is often equated with doing more. It’s easy to fall into these overdoing mindsets, especially with the abundance of business coaches and consultants promoting hustling as the key to success. While it is no secret that building a business requires significant effort, there is a crucial distinction between efficiency and clarity versus hustling. Most women aspire to create businesses that are not draining but rather empowering, allowing them to feel their best. This means that their businesses need to integrate both feminine and masculine energies, achieving a necessary balance. Burnout is not the price of success. Being a successful female CEO
When we are deprived of our feminine energy over extended periods, we start to feel empty, drained, lacking creativity, frustrated, nervous, tense, and not nourished. These are all signs that our feminine essence is crying for help and wants to be expressed. But in the worst cases, the lack of feminine embodiment might lead to burnout. This is why feminine embodiment and feminine leadership are essential for success. As a female entrepreneur, you have the opportunity to define your own work style and reclaim the right to lead from a place of feminine energy.
The key is not to revert to a hustle mentality when faced with fears on your entrepreneurial journey. Instead, we should strive for a balance between masculine and feminine energies, honouring both to create businesses and lives that are empowering, pleasurable, and balanced.
